Goodbye Jenny!

It was a crafty kind of day around here on Thursday...
Kinda in a good way,
Kinda in a REALLY HARD way too!

I made this simple and fun card.
Loved making the card, hated having to write it!

You see, we are in the final stages of transitioning the agency staff we have had in our house for the last year out, and completely to our own staff. I am super excited about our own staff (even though it is TONS more work for me!) but we all ADORE the staff we are loosing.* So it was very hard to write the words in this card to this sweet and wonderful young lady, who's last night was Thursday. She will be greatly missed in our home.

Jenny and I also worked together to come up with a craft to do with the kids on their final night together. We wanted something that they could work on together to create a lasting piece that each would have to remember the other. We decided on decorating picture frames, and then framing a picture of them all together. I am REALLY HAPPY with how well this project came out!

(don't forget, you can click on the picture to see them bigger if you would like)
This is the frame Audrey made. I am not surprised that she did such a great job, she is my little artist! Audrey painted and decorated the frame. Jenny wrote on the mating special words to Audrey, and I took, edited and printed the picture. Team effort!

This is Nathaniel's project, and the one that really surprised me! Nat is not usually so into art projects, but he REALLY concentrated on painting his frame so nicely, and he planned out where all the stickers went instead of just putting them on top of each other (his usual mode). Nathaniel did a GREAT job of making a very nice frame, Jenny again wrote words of encouragement and memories to Nat on the mat, and I added the picture. Another team effort!

And Jenny... oh Jenny cracked me up! I learned something new about her that night.... when it come to crafts she is a PERFECTIONIST!!! It was so cute. So Jenny created the PERFECT frame, the kids had written words on her mat earlier in the day (and did a great job of NICE handwriting too!) as a surprise to her, and again I added the picture. Team effort number 3.

All of the frames came out so cute and are reflective of the one who made them. The kids have them right by their beds to have in the coming days when they miss Jenny. (Nat actually slept WITH his the first night, crying for HOURS after she left.... it was so sad, but I am glad he has something to hold onto when he misses her!)

This is the super cute picture of the kids and Jenny that we used.

I am glad that this project came out so cute. And I am glad that we have that good bye behind us, because it was HARD. But I am NOT glad that we have one more to go tonight! I wonder what we should do with Mr. Reb tonight....... any ideas???
*Little explanation from above.... we were using staff from an agency, who was in our home for a finite period of time. We LOVE our In Home Workers, but they must stay with the agency that they work for, and we have new workers that are taking over all of the shifts. It's just one of those life things, but we do have to play by the agency rules, which say no contact after said workers are out of our home. Boo Hiss....

What is Creating 4 Care?

Welcome to our blog for Simply Soares Creating 4 Care! We are so glad that you stopped by today and want to learn about us! Simply Soares Creating 4 Care is a unique business that allows me to sell my hand crafted treasures in order to pay for much needed care, medical treatments and supplies for my special son, and through doing this I am able to stay home with my children and be the best mom I can be.
Simply Soares Creating 4 Care was born out of my desire to mesh my two passions and the need for me to be home with my children more. Let me take a moment to explain how this grand adventure came about.
I am and have always been a passionate artist who loves to create. I first began learning about sewing and creating when I was around 3 years old. I played under the quilting frames in my great grandmother’s work room while she and her friends sat around and hand stitched extraordinary quilts. I was blessed that my mom and my grandmother also sewed and hand crafted while I was growing up. My memory banks hold strong memories of three generations of women creating.
When it came time for me to choose a life path in college I was torn. I had a business mind, yet my heart was all about creating. During my college years I dated a wonderful artist who continually inspired me with his talent and helped me to follow my heart. After much hard work I graduated with a degree in Home Economics with an emphasis in Fashion and Design.
For most of the years since my college days I have been blessed to be able to work in fields I like while doing things I am passionate about. I have designed wedding gowns, designed and created flower girl dresses and been a wedding coordinator. I have worked extensively in the alterations and custom sewing world, where I specialized in wedding gowns and men’s formal wear, but have played with almost everything made of cloth! I have been privileged to do a great deal of design and conceptual work, creating visions that people have in their minds into wearable art.
In 2006, I was blessed to be able to open my own resell Children’s Goods store with my sister-in-law. For both of us, this was the realization of a dream, and we greatly enjoyed blessing the families of our community with affordable recycled children’s goods. While this was a profitable and fun business, life changes, and in 2010 we decided together that it was time to close this business. My personal life had changed and I needed to be able to focus 100% on my children, which is difficult to do while maintaining regular business hours!
My first passion is being a mom, and I am completely committed to both of my children. In the past few years I have transitioned to being a full time, single mom, which a job in itself! Additionally, my son has come to a place where he needs me more accessible to him 24/7. Nathaniel has Spina Bifida, a permanently disabling birth defect, and in the last few years we have been on a rough road with much of his care and health.
Since closing the business I have been trying to juggle a part time job in the professional world in addition to meeting the needs of my children. I have a FABULOUS care team to help with Nathaniel’s needs, yet I have come to the place where I realized my working outside of our home is not at all good for my family. We are all suffering from this balancing act, and that is not ok with me! My family is and will always be my first priority. Sitting at this crossroad in life it was time to make a choice. I need to provide for the financial needs of my family while being available to my children at all times to meet their needs, and hence the dream of Simply Soares Creating 4 Care was born!
Simply Soares Creating 4 Care has a threefold purpose. The first “fold” is providing a service that the community where I live needs. Seamstress work is a dying art, and there is a huge demand for quality, local, affordable work. I can help to meet that demand by providing my services in our community. I have a small office space set up in our hometown, Los Osos, where I can meet and fit customers by appointment. Then I have a studio/work area set up in our home, so I can do the actual work in my home. Having my work area at home affords me the ability to work while the kids are at school, asleep or otherwise occupied. Thus I am accessible to them and able to meet their needs while still providing for us financially.
The second “fold” of Simply Soares Creating 4 Care is establishing an outlet for me to sell my creations. I greatly enjoy using my creative energy and great finds to make unique and fun family items and I am looking forward to offering those items to the world! With the unlimited possibilities of the Internet and great shopping tools like Etsy, I can offer fun, creative, unique items for reasonable prices from the comfort of my own home. In our shop you can find treasures like beautiful quilts, simple nursing covers, unique children’s clothing, fresh headbands and hair clips and fun accessories, and more.  Simply Soares Creating 4 Care can be found online, at www.SimplySoares.Etsy.com. You can also find us on Facebook, where we have a fan page and will be offering fun giveaways, great deals and lots of inspiration!
The third “fold” of Simply Soares Creating 4 Care is the actual care component. Nathaniel is a delightful boy who has had many victories in his life, yet he still needs a support system to help him meet his full potential in life. We have a wonderful team of personal assistants and care providers that comes in and works in our home with our family to help us all have a better quality of life. Sometimes these folks come in and work with Nathaniel so that I can spend some quality time with Audrey, sometimes they work with Audrey so I can focus on Nathaniel, and sometimes they play mommy so I can take a much needed break! I have learned that even though I am a single mom, I am NOT a superhero! In order to be the best mom possible I need down time and breaks too! Our care team is a VITAL part of our family and Creating 4 Care allows me to continue to fund this team.
When you put all three folds of this business together and look at the whole picture you can see that while this is a fun and creative adventure, it is also a way to meet the financial and practical needs of our family while being 100% family focused! And THAT is my first goal in life, to be 100% focused on the BEST thing for my children and my family!
I hope that you have enjoyed the journey through which Simply Soares Creating 4 Care was created and that you can see how important each and every supporter in this endeavor is to us. My passion is to be the best mom possible and provide for my unique family while being true to the person I was created to be. Creating 4 Care blends all of those things and will be a blessing to our family for years to come!

Meeting the Soares Family

Let's take a few moments and introduce you to our family...

I am Gretchen.
I am currently a 37 year old woman who wears MANY hats in a given day.

My favorite role (and probably most challenging) is that of Mommy to 3 wonderful angels (in my dreams anyways). There is my angel daughter, Taylor, who would be 13 years old right now. Taylor now resides in the arms of Jesus in a place called heaven, and we will save her story is one for another day. Next up is my special prince, Nathaniel, who is 10 1/2. And bringing up the rear is my littlest princess, Audrey, who is 8. I am a single mom, and although I have a wonderful Care Team to help out, all of the care of these darlings lays completely on my shoulders! My family and I are blessed to live in the beautiful Central Coast of California.
In addition to caring for my family I am also the sole provider for them. This gets a little tricky with a special needs child, but we hang tough. Creating 4 Care was born out of my need to care for my family and my desire to provide for them. I am excited about this new adventure!

In my spare time (or my dreams of spare time anyways!) I enjoy Scrap booking, sewing and just plain being creative. I also love to read, do volunteer work and hang out with my kiddos. We enjoy living each day with a loving Lord, and walking out his plan for our life. I remind myself everyday how blessed I am and no matter how tough the road, it is so worth the journey!

I will try not to make this volumes long.... but Nathaniel has a very unique, very long story, so we will see what happens! Nathaniel is my wonderful 10 year old son and there are many great things about him. Part of what defines Nathaniel is also what makes him very special in many ways.... you see Nathaniel was born with a congenital birth defect commonly known as Spina Bifida.

Nathaniel's story actually begins LONG before he was born! He has an entire scrapbook of his life before his birthday! When I was just 16 weeks pregnant with Nathaniel doctors told me that he had a birth defect commonly know as Spina Bifida. I feel that our family was blessed to know this early on because it gave us choices and power. When I was just 21 weeks pregnant with Nathaniel, a team of many exceptional doctors at University of California San Francisco Medical Center operated on Nathaniel and myself. At the time Nathaniel was less that one pound and one of the doctors compared his size to the of a Snickers bar! Through this new procedure, the doctors were able to go in intrauterine and close Nathaniel's lesions caused by Spina Bifida. Nathaniel was born at 32 weeks gestation (8 weeks premature) weighing 3 lbs. 15 oz. He was so tiny and already had scars on his little body, but he was a strong willed child and his will was for life to the fullest!
Nathaniel does NOT let his disability slow him down at all!
Through the last 10 years life has not been without challenges, but it also hasn't been without victories! Nathaniel has many of the traditional complications related to Spina Bifida, such as bowel and bladder complications, reduced gross and fine motor skills, and attention and behavioral issues. But he is also blessed with the ability to walk unassisted, and escaped the need for a shunt, which I truly dreaded.

Nathaniel is able to run and play sports, which is a blessing considering his love of them!

And that is your little introduction to Prince Nathaniel!

Nathaniel is a lover of all sports and will play anything as long as it has a ball, bat or racket in it!

He HATES to read, and loves to listen to anything (stories, books on tape, movies, music... anything!).

He thinks art is for girls, painting is to express anger, and creating is NOT his strong suit.

He can figure out ANY electronic game without reading and will play them for hours on end.

Friendships are not something he is good at building and he is fine playing alone, unless he needs a body for sports and even then, he will play the sport with you, but conversation is not a part of it to him.

I love my son to pieces. But I do have to admit he has a few quirks!
Audrey is my youngest daughter at 8 years old.

Audrey has MANY personalities and you are about to meet all of them..

The Princess.....
Audrey is all around princess right now. She loves anything girly, frilly and fun. She is completely into everything dance too and is becoming quiet the little dancer. Audrey loves to refer to herself as Princess Audrey, but doesn't like ti if you call her Princess Sassy Pants, which I think is much more fitting at times!

The Cutie Pie.....
Audrey can be especially sweet, and very empathetic! She cracks me up sometimes at how incredibly sweet she is. She loves to dress herself up cute as can be and is ALWAYS the one being sweet to the under dog, the lonely heart, or the kid getting picked on.

The Sweetheart...
Audrey is my sweetest child. My heart just melts when she is in her sweet mood. My favorite "sweet thing" about her right now is my nightly love song. Every night, before she goes to bed, Audrey sings me a love song. It is so sweet.... it varies a little from night to night, but it always follows along these lines....

"I love my Queen Mommy,
I love my Queen Mommy so much,
My Queen Mommy is the Sweetest Mommy ever..."

ahhh... to melt a mommy's heart! And of course I answer her,
"And I love my Princess Audrey"

Audrey is the best helper, so caring and just a love to be around...
Unless she is in her final personality...

The Diva....
Of all of Audrey's personalities, I think the DIVA is the most fitting on a regular basis! We love to say that she is 8 going on 18! Audrey spends most of her days with her cousins, Brianna (15) and Josie (12), so she is constantly picking up on teenager behaviors. Ugh! Such fun. While she is the youngest and loves to be sweet, she also has the sassiest way ever about her, second only to Josie! (I love you too Jo Jo Bear :) )

That is Audrey in a nut shell!

Thanks for taking a couple of minutes to meet us, now won't you please introduce yourself to us?
